Meet Gemma - The Person behind Gem MovementÂ
Gemma’s passion for movement began at just four years old, when she started both gymnastics and dance. From the very beginning, they became her joint passions, and she dreamed of one day becoming a professional dancer.
Throughout her childhood, Gemma trained in ballet and Irish dance and became a member of Hampshire Youth Dance Company. Alongside her dance training, she began her gymnastics journey in recreational classes before progressing into competitive artistic gymnastics and later TeamGym. As part of her TeamGym team, Gemma became a two-time British Champion and achieved third place at a European competition. She then competed in aerobic gymnastics before leaving to undertake full-time vocational dance training.
Gemma completed her professional dance training with a double distinction while also gaining her gymnastics coaching qualifications and an Exercise to Music Instructor qualification. She went on to perform professionally for MSC Cruises and Carnival Cruise Line, as well as at corporate events across Surrey and London.
Throughout every stage of her journey, Gemma was supported by her parents, Brian and Debbie. Their belief in her abilities, encouragement and willingness to support her dreams gave Gemma the confidence to pursue a career in dance, gymnastics and movement.
After returning from life at sea, Gemma joined her mum, Debbie, who was running Hart Gymnastics Club alongside a thriving school gymnastics programme. Gemma and Debbie worked together for many years, developing Hart into a welcoming and inclusive club that supported children from their very first gymnastics class through to competitive gymnastics pathways.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Debbie sadly passed away. With the recent arrival of her first baby, Gemma faced the difficult decision of whether she could continue running Hart Gymnastics without her mum beside her. Determined to honour Debbie and continue the work they had started together, Gemma chose to carry on building the club and supporting the community they had created.
GEM Movement grew from Gemma’s desire to expand this vision while reconnecting with both sides of her own journey: dance and gymnastics. It brings together her professional experience as a dancer, her lifelong love of movement and her mum’s passion for gymnastics.
Sadly, neither Brian nor Debbie is here today to see GEM Movement open its doors. GEM Movement is Gemma’s way of thanking them for their unwavering belief, support and encouragement throughout her life. It is a celebration of the dreams they encouraged her to follow and the values they helped her develop.
GEM Movement is more than a business. It is the next chapter of a lifelong dream and a lasting tribute to two very special parents. It has been created to give people of all ages and abilities a welcoming place to move, learn, build confidence and shine.
